The Dalgona coffee trend began on TikTok, with the hashtag #DalgonaCoffee garnering over 10 million views on the video-making application. The trend soon spilled over to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube too with video recipes being shared by people who tried their hand at it. Dalgona coffee is named after a famous Korean street candy of the same name-in Korea, they call it ppopgi. As a candy, it is similar to toffee or honeycomb that’s placed on a stick, but the now-viral caffeinated version as seen on TikTok and even on YouTube food channels is a three-ingredient sweet coffee-based froth you put on top of iced milk.

You can think of it as a reverse latte where the coffee is replaced by iced milk, while the steamed milk is replaced by the coffee froth. If you like your coffee sweet and milky, you should definitely try making it at home! This coffee can be had anytime within the comfort of one’s own home.

Dalgona Coffee- Its Origin

People are going crazy about posting pictures while making coffee on social media. But have you ever thought about its origin? Where does this coffee come from? Why is it ruling the social media platforms now? Well, there have been different revelations about the origin of this coffee. Some people say that it has been first popularised by the South Korean actor, Jung II-woo. He was served this beverage when he went to visit Macau. But according to other sources, a South Korean YouTube channel made it popular, and then it became viral on TikTok. However, as I told you earlier Dalgona is actually a popular sweet candy available on the streets of South Korea. It was highly popular between 1970 and 1980.

History of Dalgona

Dalgona was first created after the Korean War (1950-53). During that time, US Army personnel used to give sweets to children. But their parents were not able to afford those sweets for their kids. So, they made their own version of candy and named it Dalgona. Dalgona sweets are quite similar to large lollipops and they are made in different shapes like heart, star, etc. This candy recipe has now been turned into the popular hot beverage- Dalgona Coffee.

Taste of Dalgona Coffee

It tastes like both very strong in its coffee flavor and very sweet due to the sugar.

What Type of Milk to Use?

Any type of milk works great with this recipe since you’re essentially just adding the whipped coffee on top of milk. If you want to keep this dairy-free and vegan, here are my favorite kinds of milk to use:

  • Unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • Unsweetened almond milk
  • Oat milk
  • Cashew milk
  • Coconut milk

All of these would be delicious. If you’re looking for a lighter, lower-calorie option, I recommend unsweetened almond milk. If you want a creamy, decadent version I’d recommend oat milk or coconut milk.
