I love cold coffee because of its rich creamy taste. When I found this new version of coffee I couldn’t stop myself to make and taste this as well. As all coffee lovers united to create a new recipe that has gone viral on social media, globally and in India. Dalgona coffee is the latest coffee fad that has taken the internet by storm So definitely, in this post I’m going to share my side of views but most probably I’ll explain all about it- from it’s origin to history, how to make it, the taste of this coffee, it’s variants and so on… So let’s get a start.
A brief intro of Dalgona Coffee
The Dalgona coffee trend began on TikTok, with the hashtag #DalgonaCoffee garnering over 10 million views on the video-making application. The trend soon spilled over to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube too with video recipes being shared by people who tried their hand at it. Dalgona coffee is named after a famous Korean street candy of the same name-in Korea, they call it ppopgi. As a candy, it is similar to toffee or honeycomb that’s placed on a stick, but the now-viral caffeinated version as seen on TikTok and even on YouTube food channels is a three-ingredient sweet coffee-based froth you put on top of iced milk.
You can think of it as a reverse latte where the coffee is replaced by iced milk, while the steamed milk is replaced by the coffee froth. If you like your coffee sweet and milky, you should definitely try making it at home! This coffee can be had anytime within the comfort of one’s own home.
Dalgona Coffee- Its Origin
People are going crazy about posting pictures while making coffee on social media. But have you ever thought about its origin? Where does this coffee come from? Why is it ruling the social media platforms now? Well, there have been different revelations about the origin of this coffee. Some people say that it has been first popularised by the South Korean actor, Jung II-woo. He was served this beverage when he went to visit Macau. But according to other sources, a South Korean YouTube channel made it popular and then it became viral on TikTok. However, as I told you earlier Dalgona is actually a popular sweet candy available on the streets of South Korea. It was highly popular between 1970 and 1980.
History of Dalgona
Dalgona was first created after the Korean War (1950-53). During that time, US Army personnel used to give sweets to children. But their parents were not able to afford those sweets for their kids. So, they made their own version of candy and named it Dalgona. Dalgona sweets are quite similar to large lollipops and they are made in different shapes like heart, star, etc. This candy recipe has now been turned into the popular hot beverage- Dalgona Coffee.
Here’s How to make Dalgona Coffee
Ingredients you need:
- 2 tbsp Instant Coffee
- 2 tbsp sugar
- hot water 2 tbsp
- 1/2 glass cold milk
- Ice cubes as required
- Sweetener e.g. condensed milk(if you require or wish to add for making it sweeter as per your wish)
Method: Step by step
Combine coffee, hot water and sugar in a bowl. Use a hand-mixer or simply a spoon to beat the mixture at a fast pace.
Vigorously whisk until the mixture turns silky smooth and shiny, then continue whisking until it thickens and holds its lofty, foamy shape.
Pour milk in a glass. Top it with ice cubes.
Then dollop and swirl the whipped coffee mixture on top, mixing before drinking, if desired.
You can add sweetener if you want to make it sweeter. ( it depends on your taste).
- You can add more sugar to the coffee if needed.
- You can store this whipped coffee in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 7 days. But do not freeze.
- Add hot milk to make cappuccino.
- You can sweeten the milk with condensed milk or sugar as per your need.
As like all eatables or drinking items Dalgona coffee also has its nutritional facts. Below is the nutritional fact chart:-

- We always feel instant energy by drinking coffee, in such a way, dalgona coffee will also be a new experiment and will also give freshness.
- It can be a good option for summer because it uses ice which will provide coolness to the body.
- This drink provides relief in the problem of acidity because we use cold milk in it, which is beneficial to reduce the acidity of the stomach.
Can You Serve it Hot?
Yes! I really liked it iced and that’s how I’ve seen most people serve it, but it can certainly be served over hot milk for a warm coffee drink.
Taste of Dalgona Coffee
It tastes like both very strong in its coffee flavor and very sweet due to the sugar.
What Type of Milk to Use?
Any type of milk works great with this recipe since you’re essentially just adding the whipped coffee on top of milk. If you want to keep this dairy-free and vegan, here are my favorite kinds of milk to use:
- Unsweetened vanilla almond milk
- Unsweetened almond milk
- Oat milk
- Cashew milk
- Coconut milk
All of these would be delicious. If you’re looking for a lighter, lower-calorie option, I recommend unsweetened almond milk. If you want a creamy, decadent version I’d recommend oat milk or coconut milk.
